Fine-scale temporal dynamics of herpes virus and vibrios in seawater during a polymicrobial infection in the Pacific oyster Crassostrea gigas ArchiMer

The Pacific oyster Crassostrea gigas is currently being impacted by a polymicrobial disease that involves early viral infection by ostreid herpesvirus-1 (OsHV-1) followed by a secondary bacterial infection leading to death. A widely used method of inducing infection consists of placing specific pathogen-free oysters (‘recipients’) in cohabitation in the laboratory with diseased oysters that were naturally infected in the field (‘donors’). With this method, we evaluated the temporal dynamics of pathogen release in seawater and the cohabitation time necessary for disease transmission and expression. We grew Pacific oysters (Crassostrea gigas) in a French Mediterranean coastal breeding area, the Thau lagoon, to examine the influence of stocking density on their growth and quality (i.e. condition index and biochemical composition). Oysters were reared on ropes suspended on a culture table for 15 months between March 1999 to June 2000 at 8 different densities involving two cross factors: the number of ropes per square (NR, i.e. 30, 50,65 and 100 ropes) and the number of oysters per rope (NO, i.e. 78 and 120 oysters). La densité d'élevage des mollusques est un des facteurs importants qui conditionnent la qualité de la production. Dans le bassin de Thau, une réflexion est actuellement en cours pour mettre en place un schéma des structures encadrant les pratiques conchylicoles de manière à améliorer et régulariser la qualité des huîtres. L'objectif de ce travail est de proposer, sur la base de données les plus objectives possibles, des recommandations en terme de densité d'élevage qui permettraient d'éviter une surcharge aussi bien locale que globale sur le bassin.
